This past weekend was the first tourney of the year that the weather was immaculate for all 4 rounds of the event. It was about time mother nature gave us Disc golfers a break. “Big Wave” Dave George and the entire NHDGC(New Hanover Disc Golf Club) put together a superbly run event and manicured a beautiful and very difficult course. 91 people tested there skills at trying to tame TThe Payne.

This Azalea Tourney was my 3rd try at taming Castle Hayne Park. The last 2 years I finished in 2nd place once to Bard friZZak Soleng and last year to Mike Hofmann. With the past 2 King’s of The Castle not attending this year, the door was open for a New King to be crowned.

After the first round was over Jeb Bryant shot a very solid 56, which gave him a 2 stroke lead over me, Justin Jernigan, Jeremy Koling and Sean Gough. I was very pleased with my score considering that I only had 1 deuce the entire first round. The 2nd round was very competitive, JJ tied the current course record with a 54. I shot a 56 to stay within 2 of the lead. I only had 2 deuces in the 2nd round.
The 3rd round ended with a bit of shuffeling on the lead card. Jeb shot the hot round with a 55 to take the lead by 2 over me and 3 over Rory Joyce and 4 over JJ. I shot a 59 in the 3rd round, with only 2 deuces again. 5 deuces thru the first 3 rounds and all rounds in the 50’s.

The 4th round was built up to be a good one with the top 4 players within 4 of the lead. After the 4 holes of the final round I had taken the lead by a stroke and for good. I proceeded to shoot a 24 on the front nine, my best front ever at The Castle. The back nine was solid for me all weekend and this round was no different. I carded my first, 2nd and 3rd deuces of the back nine on holes 13, 14 and 18. My only deuces all weekend on the back nine, all during the 4th round.

So lets see here…I had 5 deuces thru the first 3 rounds and 7 deuces in the final round. One of my goals for the weekend was to shoot all rounds in the 50’s and I did that. I also got the New course record in the final round with a 52. All in all it was a beautiful weekend for golf.

Thanks again to all involved with this great event.

  1. Great shootin’, Brian. Very impressive win on one of the toughest courses we play. I enjoy your Zonedriven blog entries, esp. your thoughts on practice and preparation. Keep up the good work!!

  3. 52 is an amazing round. I sure wish the ratings reflected how truly impressive that is. Wish I could have been on the lead card to see it. JJ told me it was pretty amazing to watch. Once again, great shooting.

  4. Hey schweb,
What did you throw to duece 14?

I would like to hear the whole 18 play thru if you had the time.

  5. Schweb you mullet, good shooting at TThe CasTTle. Wish I could have been there to take you down! So, you going to go undefeated this year or what??
