  1. Have you tried the Star Max. It’s a little inconsistent, however it is crazy overstable. Great with high speed forehands and spike hyzers. Once beaten in to your liking, it will do what you want. Also good for short range shots in the wind. I was just a little surprised you and your massive arm don’t have this in your bag.

  2. Avery, have you thrown the TeeRex-X yet? I went to the clinic at the Hambrick and I maybe remember you mentioning it. I think the Star TeeRex-X is the best distance driver in the game right now…

  3. Jeff,
I have tried the Max out for a couple of weeks, it seemed to be very comparable to the new TeeRex-X. I do agree that it is a great forehand disc and I know that is a great driver. If you have not tried the TeeRex-X, you should definitely check it out and let me know what you think.

  4. Taylor,
I love throwing the new TeeRex-X for long distance stable shots that I need to finish to the left. It is also great for distance forehand shots as well. It has the same flight pattern as the original TeeRex but just a bit more overstable in comparision. Thanks again for coming out to the clinic, I hope that it will help with your game. Please do not hesitate to write to me with any questions that you may have.

  5. I’ve never even heard of it. I love the Star TeeRex, it’s the one I go to before my Star Max. Where can this disc be found? A more overstable TeeRex is a dream come true. I’ve looked on Innova’s website and didn’t see it. Is it PDGA approved yet? Thanks for the tip!

  6. Are you gonna make it back out to Ohio for any other tournaments this year Avery? Have you tried out the Champion TeeRex-X yet? I got one a while back and it seems even a bit more overstable than the Star edition.

  7. Jeff,
The Star TeeRex X can be found at most local vendors and retailers if they are on top of their disc ordering. It came out 2 months ago and has become very popular with many of the further throwing top pros. Let me know what you think and how it might compare to the Star Max?

  8. Taylor,
We will returning from Europe after a few weeks and stopping back at my parents house and playing the Cleveland Roc Tournament on September 1-2. Then flying back to Oregon for a few weeks for some rest before returning out on the tour until the completion the USDGC in October.

I have not the opportunity to try out the Champion TeeRex X yet, I am sure that it would have to be a bit more overstable in that type of plastic. I will have to get one soon and check it out along with new Destroyers.

  9. I found some at the local shop here in Fort Collins. Haven’t had a chance to throw one yet, but look forward to trying it. I’ll let ya know what I think. Thanks for all your input, it’s really cool that you take time out of your schedule to respond to this type of stuff. Have a great rest of the season.

  10. LOVE LOVE LOVE the Star TeeRex X. It was exactly how I imagined it !! Only have one at the moment but more will be in the arsenal, thanx so much for the heads up on that. If you hadn’t told me about it I probably wouldn’t have known of it, THANX again.

  11. Is the “In My Bag” section still up to date? I am wondering how the Destroyer has affected your bag now, and if it has bumped others out.

  12. Jeremy,
It is now up to date. I have not found a use for the Destroyer on the golf course yet, personally. It does make a great distance disc bit it is not what I was looking for as far as a golf disc for the fact that it does not handle high amounts of arm speed. The TeeRex has still proven to be my long range driver of choice because it has great speed and carry along with great stability toward the end of its flight. So don’t get me wrong, the Destroyer is a great disc, just not for me on the golf course but it has proven to increase the throwing distances of countless other players. So on the distance field, the destroyer is amazing disc and goes a mile when you hit it just right. So it will be a toss up between the Star Wraith or the Star Destroyer for this years distance contests. Thanks for the great question. We will have to see what Innova comes out with this season.

  13. Avery,

I’ve found the same trouble in putting the Star Destroyer in my bag. It isn’t as versatile as the Star Teerex-X for me. However, I have found room in my bag for the Pro Destroyer which to me feels more stable than the star edition. What are your thoughts on the Pro Destroyer? I saw that you guys were throwing these across the lake at the USDGC….do you like it better than the Pro Wraith where pure distance is concerned?

  14. Taylor,
It will definitely take some field practice with the disc to judge if it is worthy enough to make the starting lineup come tournament time. As for the Pro vs. the Star versions of the Destroyers I have found them to be very similar in flight stability but of course I have not had to many throws with either of them. I will keep you posted but I am definitely going to stick with the Wraiths for all out distance because of their predictable turn and their forward push toward the end of their flight. Thanks for the disc comments.

    -Avery-

  15. How do you feel about these Star/Pro Destroyers? They are now my go to distance discs. They are insanely fast and get to end point before you even know it. As said in DGW, they’re gonna destroy all courses before to long. Just wondering what your thoughts are on the Destroyer and what is your main distance disc.

    ps
Did you hear that Kiss the Sky in Aspen is going bi-annual due to many issues. I believe that one main contributing issue is lack of attendance.

  16. Oops, sorry didn’t read the threads above!!!

  17. Avery,

How are the Star Rexs and Gators I traded you for the 11Xs
flying for you? I have only put one of the 11Xs in my bag as of yet and its money so straight and they are flying further then ever.

  18. Nice! Great to hear. Those Rocs will only get better and better with age. Nothing beats a broken-in Roc. Enjoy!

    -Avery-

  19. Hey Avery, I got a question. I saw a video of you and you said you had thrown a new personal record of 697ft. How do produce the power in your swing and what discs do you count on for that kind of distance. I do like the Distroyer for that last little come back but when it comes down to just making sure I get all my distance, it seems I can’t get away from a Wraith- champion for some s-flieght and Pro for a dead straight burn down the middle.

  20. BUS,

The power that I generate is all produced by using all of my body’s built-up momentum that I transfer into the disc at the time of release. Too many players throw using just their upper body, not a great way to produce enough power to throw far. Throwing is a total body movement that must incorporate the lower body as well as the upper body to fully produce and generate enough power to throw long. But before all that, is technique, timing and speed. Those are all essential in truly throwing the furthest shots possible.

I like the Destroyers a lot, but I also believe that Wraiths are capable of flying as far or further. I think that Destroyers might be a little to stable toward the end of their flight to truly maximize their distance. Wraiths have the characteristics of that late carry to extend their total flight.

    Good luck with the distance.

  21. Hey Avery,
I’ve been thinking about this for a couple days now. I saw you putting at the Illinois State Tournament this past weekend. You, Nikko, and George Smith were in a tight battle. I found myself in the same situation in my division at the tournament. Although I am pretty confident with my putting when I’m near the edge of the circle (25 to 30 feet) it gets to my head and I end up missing the put. Any advice for putting in a tight tournament situation like that? Thanks!

  22. Mike,

You really need to concentrate on the task at hand and forget about every thing that is happening around you at that moment before the putt. Go through the motions as if you were in the backyard doing practice putts. Keep your arm swing loose and tighten your body to secure your stance, this will stop you from getting your body off line. I really concentrate on my body positioning and make sure that that hand extends when I release at the basket. Sounds simple and logical, but like you know it is much different when the pressure is on. So focus on the extension and make sure to release with your hand finishing at the basket.

    Best of luck with practice.

  23. Avery,
i throw forehand and backhand but cant break my forehand over 350 and i can throw my backhand 420 any tips on the forehand.

  24. Avery,
I know that you have one of the best forehands on tour, but i am having trouble breaking it over 350. what are some tips, and what disc do you think i should use. I am currently using a ESP Force. If you are not familiar with it i would say it is a more overstable destroyer.
    Thanks,
    Aaron 33722

  25. Have you thrown the boss yet? What do you think?

  26. Hey Avery,

I am curious about which discs you throw at different distances on open holes in perfect conditions. You have alot of different drivers in your bag. I guess I am trying to determine, with the amount of power you have, how you weigh out when to throw a consistent driver (maybe with more stability) over something that has more potential for distance.

I’m not trying to obtain any secrets, but if you are willing to share. . .

Also, have you integrated the Boss into your game yet?

    Thanks

  27. Aaron,

The sidearm or forehand shot is one of the most difficult shots to teach properly because it is such an unnatural move on stand point of biomechanics. It better shown then even attempted to describe in writing.

Some simple pointers are to keep the elbow tucked when swinging the arm across the body and following through with your arm extended at the target when you release. If it is distance that you are looking for, you are on the right track by using a distance driver, the only trouble is that they have a tendency to flip over due to the amount of torque that is generated with the sidearm throw. I recommend using the Star Excaliber or Star Destroyer but thats me.

I actually have plans to make a DVD along with Ken Climo to show the very essence of proper sidearm technique in his very own video series due out early next year.

Sorry that I didnt respond sooner but I hope these tips help and good luck with the practice.

    -Avery-

  28. Pete,

Have I thrown the boss yet? What do I think?

I have thrown the Boss a few times and I am very impressed with its speed. I compare it to be very similar to a Destroyer.

If you have not tried one I recommend that you do and see if it works for you.

    -Avery-

  29. Jeremy,

Not trying to obtain any secrets, huh? No Secrets here, I will tell you all that you need to know about Disc Golf.

First off, I think that it comes with a lot of practice and course experience to determine which discs to throw in certain situations and distances. It really comes down to how well that you know your discs and how far they travel when you throw them correctly at 100%, 85%, 70% 50% and so on.

I like to throw hyzer shots for the fact that I can judge there distances way better then throwing straight shots. I also like to club down on lots of my golf shots. What I mean by that is that I like to throw a 100% Roc shot instead of throwing a 70% Teebird shot. That allows me to take full swings and not try to finesse the disc to much. Drivers tend to get a lot of movement when thrown with finesse due to there speed.

Its not that I will not throw a finesse driver shot, I just tend not to if I dont have to. There are lots that can go wrong in comparison and you have to be on your game to pull off those types of shots. Climo and Schultz are the best at throwing 75% finesse driver shots and like I said you have to be really good.

I have not integrated the Boss into my bag as of yet because it doesn’t do anything better then what my Pro Destroyers can do, they dont go any further that I have seen and they seem be harder to control. Which in turn, they might make excellent discs for distance contests in the future. I will have throw them a little more to find their place in my game.

    Thanks for the great questions.

    -Avery-

  30. hey avery i love the pro destroyer

  31. Hey Avery have u ever tried out a star valkyrie their amazing! If u ever get the chance try one out.

  32. Brandon,

I am glad that you really like the Pro Destroyer as well. It has increased my distance tremendously.

It is by far my furthest driver in my bag. For all of those that have not thrown one yet, I highly recommend it.

I have tried valkyries in the past but new technology has surpassed them over the years. But stick with whatever discs work for you. Best of luck and wish you the best.

    -Avery Jenkins #7495-

  33. Thanks for the tip and i found that star valkyrie so I use it im only twelve and I just started this year!

  34. and ive got 10 birdies and almost a ace

  35. Hey Avery,
I read that you do a lot of weight training when not disc golfing. I was wondering what type of training you do to better your game?
Also how often do you find yourself adding or taking away discs from your bag?

    -Tim

  36. Tim,

I do a majority of my weight training in the off-season, winter months. It give me time to get away from throwing and get back to the essentials of Strength and Core training to improve my distance and stamina on the course. It is best to do it in the off-season that way my game is less effected from the change in power.

I have a pretty set bag of discs that I use on the course, the essential discs for any situation that I might face during a round. I only time that I change discs is when I play Mountain Courses where the disc selection is crucial.

    -Avery Jenkins #7495-

  37. Brandon,

Keep up the good work and I hope to see you out there someday soon.

Best of Luck with your DG progress.

    -Avery Jenkins-

  38. What’s your take on the new boss and groove?

  39. Tyler,

Not sure on both of those discs as of yet this early in the season. I have only been out to throw a few times since my restrictive non-throwing off-season. I be sure to find out soon and I head toward the desert tournaments soon and get those discs flying again.

Thanks for the question and I will try both of these discs very soon.

    -Avery Jenkins #7495-

  40. I was wondering which disc you prefer with a tail wind? the pro destroyer works best for me in the headwinds, and works well with the tail, but i find my wraith is doing way better usually. do i just need more practice?

  41. Avery,

I was wondering if you have thrown any Katanas?

Would love to get your opinion of the disc.

    Thanks,
    Justin

  42. Jimmy,

It all really depends on arm speed if you are able to generate enough power to get a Destroyer flying straight in a tail wind as well. But Wraiths are slightly less stable and work just fine if you getting all of the necessary and desired distance.

Stick with the discs that work best for you, and more practice always helps in all cases.

    -Avery Jenkins #7495-

  43. Justin,

Katanas are a great Distance Disc because they have amazing speed and glide.

But they have way to much side to side movement to be a consistent Golf Disc for me, I have too much arm speed and throw too hard for this disc to handle.

A great disc for players looking to gain more distance on their drives.

If you have not thrown one yet you should definitely try one!!
